Sampling of Castiglione cores for palynological analyses on marine isotopic stage-MIS 7 resumed in March-April 2025.
MIS 7 extends from 240,000 to 190,000 years ago and represents the penultimate interglacial period before the present. Studying this period is very important because it is characterized by the most rapid thaw in the last 800,000 years and contains some warm phases, with temperatures similar to the present, during which many of the forest covers of southern Europe developed.
The study of pollens in the sediments is aimed at observing changes in vegetation in response to the climatic changes that occurred during this period, providing useful data for studies of future climate scenarios.
