On 23 March 2021, the drilling of the first borehole began in the area of the Castiglione crater. Drilling continued for the rest of the week and ended on 29 March, when the entire lacustrine succession was recovered and the bedrock was encountered at 115 m of depth. The sedimentary cores were recovered inside PVC punches and stored at INGV in Rome..
