Tefrostratigraphic analyses on marine cores have begun. In particular, 43 tephra collected by the NDT09 Carrot (Tyrrhenian Sea, Marsili) were analyzed. 43 tephra samples from the NDT09 core were treated by washing in deionized water in an ultrasonic bath to disaggregate them and to remove impurities. Hydrogen peroxide (35% v/v) was repeatedly added to the samples to further disaggregate the matrix, remove organic matter and soluble compounds. 30 selected samples were then dried at 60 C°, mounted with epoxy resin in 1-inch stubs, polished and prepared for textural, mineralogical and geochemical characterizations. Tephra samples were described under a stereomicroscope and a petrographic microscope. Foto credits Bianca Scateni and Sonja Gaviano (INGV PI)
