The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) is an Italian public research institution established in 1999, and today it is the largest research body in Europe in the field of Geosciences. Its mission is to monitor, study, and understand geophysical and environmental phenomena - such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tsunamis - with the aim of assessing natural hazards and mitigating the related risks and advancing scientific knowledge. INGV operates as a Competence Center of the Italian Civil Protection Service, managing the national seismic, volcanic, and tsunami monitoring networks, and providing continuous 24/7 surveillance through its operation centers in Rome, Naples, and Catania. Its activities are structured into three main areas: - Scientific research in seismology, volcanology, and environmental sciences; - Institutional and service support for society, public administrations, and industry; - Outreach and education, including training, public engagement, and technology transfer. INGV plays an active role in major international initiatives such as EPOS (European Plate Observing System) and EMSO (European Multidisciplinary Seafloor and water column Observatory), and promotes educational programs like EduRisk to foster awareness of natural hazards.
