- General CharacteristicsARTiC is an automated analysis tool designed to classify ground deformation time series derived from satellite Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) observations. The methodology is based on STL (Seasonal-Trend decomposition using LOESS), which decomposes displacement time series into three components: a long-term trend, a seasonal signal, and a residual component. These elements enable the identification and classification of different deformation behaviours, allowing the users to distinguish persistent deformation trends from environmentally driven seasonal responses, providing a more robust understanding of surface motion and its potential drivers
The tool has been developed to process large volumes of multi-temporal InSAR observations, transforming complex displacement records into meaningful deformation classes that support the interpretation of landslide dynamics and ground instability processes.
In GET-IT2, ARTiC will be integrated with SNAPPING products to automatically classify displacement time series generated within the Geohazards Exploitation Platform.- Specific Products DescriptionARTiC requires as input displacement time series derived from (any) InSAR processing software. The tool analyses the temporal behaviour of each measurement point and assigns it to a predefined deformation class based on statistical indicators and regression-based characteristics.
Outputs include deformation pattern classifications, confidence metrics, main acceleration/deceleration periods, spatial distribution maps of motion classes, and summary statistics describing dominant deformation behaviours across the area of interest. The products can be used to support landslide inventory updating, slope instability investigations, and the prioritisation of areas requiring detailed analysis or field inspection. Future developments will also enable the evaluation of deformation evolution under different climate scenarios, supporting long-term assessments of rainfall-triggered landslide activity.- Products Availability (spatial resolution, spatial coverage, temporal resolution, delay, error, etc.)The spatial resolution of ARTiC outputs depends on the density of the input InSAR measurements and therefore varies according to the satellite mission and processing methodology employed. The tool can be applied at local, regional, or national scales wherever displacement time series are available. Temporal resolution corresponds to the frequency of the input observations, ranging from days to weeks depending on the satellite acquisition strategy.
