Landslide Tracker Scenario Model

- General CharacteristicsLandslide Tracker is an landslides mapping tool designed to automatically and rapidly identify landslides. It is particularly useful when applied to large areas when instabilities are triggered by major natural hazard events such as earthquakes or intense rainfall. The tool combines optical satellite imagery and terrain characteristics.
The model has been trained using a database containing more than 2,000 manually mapped landslides associated with a wide range of triggering mechanisms, climatic settings, geological conditions and topographic environments. This extensive training dataset enables robust transferability across different regions and hazard scenarios. The system has already been applied following major disasters, including the 2025 landslides in Indonesia (https://disasterscharter.org/activations/landslide-in-indonesia-activation-1006-), and supports activities under the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters".- Specific Products DescriptionThe module requires optical satellite imagery (Sentinel-2) acquired after an event together with elevation models. Automated processing identifies areas affected by slope failures and generates probability of each pixel to be a landslide (in a continuous scale from 0 to 1). Additional analyses can be performed to constrain landslide type based on morphology and geological context.
Outputs include estimates of affected areas which in turns will be used to derive landslide inventory maps and distribution products and assessments of exposure by intersecting mapped landslides with open-source datasets describing buildings, transport infrastructure, and population. These products provide critical information for emergency responders, civil protection agencies, and disaster management organisations during the immediate response and recovery phases.- Products Availability (spatial resolution, spatial coverage, temporal resolution, delay, error, etc.)The spatial resolution of Landslide Tracker products is 10m, based on the original Sentinel-2 resolution. The system can be deployed globally and is particularly suited to regional-scale assessments following major triggering events.
Products are generated on demand following data availability and can be delivered within hours after image acquisition. The outputs are continuously updated as new satellite observations become available, enabling progressive refinement of landslide inventories. Accuracy depends on terrain characteristics, vegetation cover, and event magnitude, with uncertainty estimates provided where appropriate. The resulting products support rapid impact assessment, disaster response, and the generation of situational awareness products for operational users.
