Valerio Materni graduated in Physics in 2006 at the Roma Tre University with a thesis in: “Development of criteria of discrimination between earthquakes and underground nuclear explosions by seismological methods”. 

In 2005 He started working at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV). He received his Ph.D. in 2009 in: “Discrimination between natural seismic events and underground nuclear explosions” at the Roma Tre University. Since 2018 he work for the 24/7 seismic surveillance service held by INGV for the Civil Protection Department (DPC). To date he is a technologist with permanent position at the INGV. 

His main research interests include: geophysical characterization and monitoring of sites affected or at risk of Sinkholes phenomena, landslides and other risk factors, development of new technologies aimed at supporting infrastructure protection and urban land monitoring, multi-parameter geophysical surveys aimed at study of archaeological areas, electrical tomography investigations in 2d and 3d configuration, capacitive electrical tomography and electromagnetic surveys (FDEM) for environmental protection and exploration.
