As explain here, data collection should be done in a grid of points as regular as possible, with a distance of approximately 50 km between a point and its closest neighbors. In the central part of the Italian peninsula this is very difficult, due to the high level of anthropogenization, the numerous electromagnetic disturbances (such as railway lines and high voltage power grids) present in the area and the frequently unfavorable orography which makes hard to find lots of land suitable for a MT campaign setup. Therefore, ideal lines were drawn approximately 50 km apart from each other, starting from the southern border of Tuscany, and the research and identification of 3-4 sites approximately along each line began, as far as environmental conditions allowed.

At each site, two separate measurement campaigns are planned and conducted:

  1. "MT - Broad Band": Three "search-coil" magnetometers, arranged along the three main directions of the geomagnetic field, carry out measurements for a period of 7-10 days at various frequencies ranging from 16384 Hz to 32 Hz. These frequencies allow for the reconstruction of subsurface conductivity profiles to a depth of approximately several tens of meters.
  2. "MT - Long Term": A "fluxgate" magnetometer is left in acquisition mode for an extended period of 4-6 weeks at a minimum frequency of 1 Hz. This frequency enables the reconstruction of subsurface conductivity profiles to a depth of approximately several kilometers.

The map that is shown is continuously updated, as soon as new sites are identified and campaigns are planned and carried out.

stella rossa Station Completed. This refers to stations where at least one of the two measurements campaign has been completed;

stella rossa Station On. This refers to stations where measurements are ongoing;

stella rossa Station Identified. This refers to suitable site that have been already identified but measurement campaigns are still to be planned.
