Nell'ambito del Progetto di ricerca “FIBER OPTIC CABLE USE FOR SEAFLOOR STUDIES OF EARTHQUAKE - FOCUS”, coordinato da Marc-André Gutscher del Laboratoire Géosciences Océan della Univ. Brest FRANCE, l’Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) e l'Università della Calabria (UniCal), hanno implementato una rete sismica temporanea per un esperimento sismologico attivo/passivo. La rete sismica temporanea, denominata “FocusX temporary land-network (FXland), Southern Italy” (codice di rete 1J) ha l'obiettivo di migliorare la detezione della sismicità nell'area del Mar Ionio (Italia meridionale) e l'accuratezza delle localizzazioni, definire meglio la struttura crostale della regione e i relativi sistemi di faglie.

Nello stesso periodo nell’ambito del Progetto di ricerca FOCUS, UBO, Ifremer e GEOMAR hanno implementando, dall'inizio del 2022 alla metà del 2023, una rete sismica temporanea offshore per un esperimento sismologico attivo/passivo denominata “FocusX temporary OBS-network” (codice di rete XH).

La sismicità dell'area è causata da attività tettoniche differenti a diverse profondità; infatti in questa regione c'è l'interfaccia a immersione NW della zona di subduzione della Calabria, mentre altre strutture tettoniche più superficiali note sono le faglie strike-slip, ben espresse nella morfobatimetria e osservate in profili sismici relativi a precedenti studi (Gutcheret al., 2018; Maesano et al. 2020).

Le stazioni della rete FXland, installate da dicembre 2021 fino ai primi di febbraio 2023 lungo le coste della Sicilia orientale e della Calabria sud-occidentale, sono state installate dall’Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT) e dall’Osservatorio Etneo (OE) dell'INGV e dal Laboratorio di Sismologia dell'UniCal.

Le stazioni sono state ospitate all’interno delle caserme dell’Arma dei Carabinieri avvalendosi del Protocollo d’intesa, di durata decennale, siglato tra l’INGV e l’Arma dei Carabinieri nel 2019.

L’idea di installare all’interno di caserme dei Carabinieri poste in prossimità delle aree di interesse è stata una soluzione a garanzia della massima sicurezza per la strumentazione oltre alla certezza di avere dei referenti locali che, in caso di malfunzionamenti rilevabili da remoto, possano controllare la strumentazione. La strumentazione da installare è stata fornita dalla Commissione Rete Mobile dell’ONT (COREMO); due stazioni aggiuntive sono state messe a disposizione da UniCal. Le dodici stazioni INGV erano dotate di digitalizzatori Reftek 130, mentre le due UniCal di digitalizzatori Sara SL06, le stazioni INGV sono equipaggiate principalmente con sensori velocimetrici Trillium 120C o in due casi con velocimetri Le 5s, le stazioni UniCal sono dotate di sensori velocimetrici ss08 60s.

Alla rete temporanea è stato assegnato un codice di rete 1J dall’International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks (FDSN), una istituzione internazionale i cui obiettivi sono fornire l'ubicazione e la strumentazione delle stazioni sismiche che registrano dati con una risoluzione di 24 bit in serie temporali continue con una frequenza di campionamento di almeno 20 campioni al secondo.

Tutte le stazioni sono state registrate presso l’International Seismological Centre (ISC), un’istituzione internazionale il cui scopo principale è quello di compilare il Bollettino ISC della sismicità terrestre, che per far ciò ha anche il carico di compilare il registro di tutte le sigle delle stazioni sismiche, permanenti e temporanee, i cui dati vengono usati per il Bollettino iSC.

I dati acquisiti in tempo reale dalle stazioni temporanee, sono stati integrati ai dati della RSN nell’archivio dell’European Integrated Data Archive EIDA- nodo Italia dove sono disponibili senza vincolo alla comunità scientifica nel formato internazionale Standard for Exchange of Earthquake Data (SEED). L’utilizzo, anche parziale, del dataset è consentito a condizione che sia sempre citata la fonte Moretti et al. (2022).

Le stazioni sono state integrate all’interno del sistema di sorveglianza sismica che l’INGV svolge per il Dipartimento di Protezione Civile, queste hanno registrato nei mesi che vanno da dicembre 2021 a giugno 2022 tutta la sismicità della costa siciliana orientale ed anche eventi più forti i cui epicentri si trovano in altre zone di Italia del Mediterraneo e del Mondo.

As part of the research project “FIBER OPTIC CABLE USE FOR SEAFLOOR STUDIES OF EARTHQUAKE - FOCUS", coordinated by Marc-André Gutscher of the Laboratoire Géosciences Océan of the Univ. Brest FRANCE, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) and the University of Calabria (UniCal), have implemented a temporary seismic network for an active/passive seismological experiment. The temporary seismic network, called “FocusX temporary land-network (FXland), Southern Italy” (network code 1J) has the objective of improving the detection of seismicity in the Ionian Sea area (southern Italy) and the accuracy of locations, to better define the crustal structure of the region and the related fault systems.

In the same period, within the FOCUS research project, UBO, Ifremer and GEOMAR implemented, from the beginning of 2022 to mid-2023, a temporary marine seismic network for an active/passive seismological experiment called "FocusX temporary OBS-network" (network code XH).

The seismicity of the area is caused by different tectonic activities at different depths; in fact in this region there is the subduction zone of the Ionian plate below Calabriawith a Benioff plane dipping toward NW, but there are also superficial tectonic structures mainly strike-slip faults, well expressed in the morpho bathymetry and observed in seismic profiles analyzed in previous studies (Gutcheret al ., 2018; Maesano et al. 2020).

The FXland network stations, installed from December 2021 until early February 2023 along the coasts of eastern Sicily and south-western Calabria, were installed by the Osservatorio Nazionale Terremoti (ONT) and the Osservatorio Etneo (OE) of the INGV and by the UniCal Seismology Laboratory.

The stations were housed in the barracks of the “Arma dei Carabinieri” using the ten-year Memorandum of Understanding signed between INGV and the Carabinieri in 2019.

The idea of installing inside the Carabinieri barracks located near the areas of interest was a solution to guarantee maximum safety for the instrumentation as well as the certainty of having local contact persons, almost there 24h/7 who, in the event of malfunctions, can check the instrumentation.

The equipment installed was supplied by the ONT Mobile Network Commission (COREMO); two additional stations were made available by UniCal. The twelve INGV stations were equipped with Reftek 130 digitizers, while the two UniCal with Sara SL06 digitizers, the INGV stations are mainly equipped with Trillium 120C velocity sensors and in two cases with Le 5s velocitymeters, the UniCal stations are equipped with ss08 60s velocity sensors .

The temporary network has been assigned a network code of 1J by the International Federation of Digital Seismograph Networks (FDSN).

All the stations have been registered at the International Seismological Center (ISC), an international institution whose main purpose is to compile the ISC Bulletin of global seismicity, which also run the register of all codes of the seismic stations, permanent and temporary, whose data are used for the iSC Bulletin.

The data acquired in real time from the temporary stations have been integrated with the RSN data in the archive of the European Integrated Data Archive EIDA - Italy node where they are available without any restriction to the scientific community in the international format: Standard for Exchange of Earthquake Data (SEED) . The use of the data set is permitted provided that the source Moretti et al.(2022) is always cited.

The stations have been integrated into the seismic surveillance system that INGV carries out for the Civil Protection Department, these recorded in the months from December 2021 to June 2022 all the seismicity of the eastern Sicilian coast and even stronger events whose epicenters are found in other areas of Italy, the Mediterranean and the world.
