Thanks to the ingenious work of Alessandro Iarocci, Giuseppe Di Stefano, Massimiliano Vallocchia and Massimo Mari the automatic volcanic ash sampler is now a reality and is operational on the island of Stromboli. This is truly a great result and a substantial technological advancement achieved within the UNO Project. The sampler allows the ash dispersed during volcanic activity to be collected with continuity and regularity over a long time interval. The volcanologist now, instead of "spot" sampling the ash in a given place, can collect the sampler's "revolver", and thus have up to 30 different ash samples available that were dispersed by the volcano in the time window set in the instrument.
